Breckenridge Colorado

A Peek at History
Aptly named Nah-oon-kara, meaning 'softly beautiful valley,' Breckenridge, Colorado, was once a place of peace and quiet with deer, elks, bears and other wild animals running free. This summer hunting ground for the nomadic Ute Indians was first visited in 1859 by General George E. Spencer, who came here as one of the pioneers and started a mining camp.

With the discovery of gold, the rush began and people flocked to the town on their way from rags to riches. The town was named after then Vice President John Cabell Breckenridge and the land rewarded the gold seekers abundantly until around 1940's when the mining ultimately stopped after a flooding.

Preservation and Progress
After that, a decline in its fortunes ended during the 1960's when things picked up once again and the place was opened for Alpine skiing. Today, activities in Breckenridge ski resorts have turned the town into one of the most renowned ski resorts in North America, a reputation certainly deserved.
